Prof. Cheng Gong’s Talk at CLAL: The Syntax of the Alethic “V-DE” Constructions in Chinese and Southeast Asian Languages

2014年04月11日 17:25  点击:[]

The Alethic “DE” Construction is widespread in both Chinese and Southeast Asian languages. Within the framework of Distributed Morphology, Prof. Cheng Gong fromPLA University of Foreign Languageproposes a “morphological lowering analysis” for this construction. According to Prof. Cheng, the alethicdeis a functional category which projects an Al(ethic)P abovevP in overt syntax. In later morphological module, deis lowered down to VP, either adjoined to V as an affix (in Chinese) or attached to VO as a clitic (in Southeast Asian Languages). This two-module movement analysis accounts for the syntactic and semantic properties of the Alethic “DE” construction, which obtains empirical support from historical and cross-linguistic data.
