The 5th GDUFS Forum on Applied Linguistics (the forum for short) will be held on December 1-2, 2018 by the Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS), Guangzhou, P. R. China. The forum invites proposals of about 300 English words or 500 Chinese characters each for panels and presentations that address issues in all areas of linguistics and applied linguistics, such as Phonetics and Phonology, Lexicogrammar, Semantics, Discourse, Semiotics, (Foreign) Language Teaching, Testing and Acquisition/Development, Teacher Education, Language Philosophy, Translation, Lexicography, etc., with approaches of description, corpus, mathematics and computation, Brain Imaging, among others, in memory of Professor Shichun Gui (桂诗春), the late distinguished scholar of Applied Linguistics in China.
Professor Gui (1930-2017) is pioneer of applied linguistics research and one of few initiators of contemporary linguistics study in China. He started language testing and statistics for higher education entrance examination in China, introduced language research methodologies, guided Chinese students in English learning, conducted researches in English learning psychology, corpus linguistics, web-resources for language study and others to promote China’s English teaching proficiency. In one word, Professor Gui’s academic life after 1978 has been filled with initiations and innovations and has had a fundamental influence on linguistics and applied linguistics studies in China since the end of 1970s.
The forum will invite distinguished scholars in linguistics and applied linguistics from across the world for keynote speeches.
Individual presentations will be allocated 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. Proposals for panels should include a chair and a number of thematically-related papers, each of which should be 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
All submissions, either English or Chinese or both, should be sent to ALforum2018@163.com, with a title, an abstract, presenters’ names, affiliation(s), address(es), email, and phone number before July 30, 2018. Acceptance of proposal will be notified by email in 15 September, 2018. Paper presentation may be either in English or in Chinese.
