Cognitive and Sensory Processes in Nonnative Speech Pitch Perception: An Invited Talk by Dr Yue Wang

Dr. Yue Wang, an associate professor of Linguistics and Director of the Language and Brain Lab at Simon Fraser University, Canada, presented a talk on perception of linguistic and nonlinguistic pitch by native and nonnative speakers, upon the invitation of theNationalKeyResearchCenterfor Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and Guangwai Brain and Language Lab.

Her talk focused on the differences between linguistic and nonlinguistic pitch processing and how learning experiences shape both linguistic and sensory auditory processing. She also discussed her works on musical training and tone perception to show that musical experiences like tonal language learning experiences can facilitate nonlinguistic and linguistic auditory processing. Finally, her tone training studies illustrated how pitch-learning experiences shape the brain.
