Professor Doreen D.Wu from Hong Kong Polytechnic University gave a stimulating talk on Mar. 11, 2016 at the Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, GDUFS.

Her talk focused on the diachronic evolution of approaches on new media discourse from the variationist approach as the “first wave” to the interactional approach as the“second wave”, which exhibits a picture of sociopragmatic and interculturalturn of CMC studies. Based on the review of the research on new media in the past decade, a new aspect of understanding on the key issues is explored, such as language variation, speech act, face and politeness and identity construction. Moreover, Prof. Wu proposes that interdisciplinary and multidimensional studies about new media are needed for the future research with a more comprehensive picture of interactional mode and behavior in digital age.The speech given by Professor Wu is insightful and  draws a new picture of how to understand the traditional sociopragmatic notions in the new sociolinguistic context.
