Abstract:
Without a doubt, theAmericanResearchUniversityis a source of great national pride and plays a significant role in knowledge creation and innovation in theUSand around the globe. While it is often acknowledged that scholarship and teaching mutually impact one another (see Cole, 2010), achieving this balance in the context of top US Universities has been challenging. In this talk, I will consider a recent movement within theUSand more globally that attempts to connect research and creative activity of the faculty in three ways: first, looking at the growth of inter-disciplinarity and its role in transforming both the goals and organization of research. Second, I will examine reasons why increased student participation in research can actually enhance student learning. Finally, I consider new developments in linking research to connections beyond the university gates – especially in the service of the public good and civic engagement. Drawing on innovative work going on at Clark University (the first exclusively research university in America), I argue that subtle changes in the organization, funding, and goals of research and creative activities hold the potential to transform student learning and better foster local, national and international partnerships
