Title: Multidisciplinary Research in Evolutionary Linguistics
Speaker: Dr. Tao Gong (Haskins Laboratories, Yale University)
Abstract:
This series lecture introducesevolutionary linguistics, a resurgent discipline in linguistics. I will talk about the basic concepts and theories in this discipline, and survey a varietyof research methods and examples coming from a number of relevant disciplines that contribute to our understanding of language and language evolution.
The whole series consist of 9 lectures, which will be delivered across two academic years during my visit to the National Key Research Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
This year:
Lecture 1: General Introduction to Evolutionary Linguistics
Time: 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016
Venue: Room 306, Academic Building 8
Lecture 2: Basic Concepts of Evolutionary Linguistics
Time: 9 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016
Venue: Room 306, Academic Building 8
Lecture 3: Anthropology and Archaeology Perspectives on Language Evolution
Time: 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 5. 2016
Venue: Room 306, Academic Building 8
Lecture 4: Animal Cognition and Communication
Time: 9 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016
Venue: Room 306, Academic Building 8
Next year:
Lecture 5: Genetic Perspectives on Language Evolution
Lecture 6: Neuroscience Perspectives on Language Evolution
Lecture 7: Theories of Language Origin
Lecture 8: Computer Simulation of Language Evolution
Lecture 9: Behavioral Experiments on the Origin of Communication System
This series lecture aims to extend thevision of researchers from various disciplines, summarize major directions of future research in evolutionary linguistics, and emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of studies about language and language evolution.
Speaker's bio:
Tao Gong graduated in 2007 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, supervised by Prof. William S-Y. Wang, a globally famous linguist. After graduation, he had taken the postdoctoral job at Department of Physics, Sapienza University of Rome, the Humboldt Fellowship at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, and the British Academy of Sciences Visiting Fellowship at University of Edinburgh in UK. After teaching for four years in Department of Linguistics, University of Hong Kong, Dr. Gong is now a research scientist at Haskins Laboratories, Yale University. His research interests include: evolutionary linguistics, computational simulation, complex systems, and psycholinguistics. His publications include amonograph Computational Simulation inEvolutionary Linguistics: A Study on Language Emergence (Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica, Taipei), and about 50 journal papers in many interdisciplinary and linguistics journals, such as PNAS, PLOS ONE, Proceedings of Royal Society B, Lingua, Language,Language Sciences, Language and Linguistics, Artificial Life, Biolinguistics. He also gave several reports in many international conferences such as Evolang5-9 and IACL-19.
